Culinary delights
Prekmurje is well-known for its unique cuisine. The most popular among the culinary specialties are the »prekmurska gibanica« and the »bograč«.
Prekmurska gibanica, or Prekmurje layer cake, is prepared with pastry covered by four different fillings (poppy seeds, curd cheese, walnuts and apples) in a fixed order with a layer of strudel pastry in between them. The fillings are repeated in the same order once again. On top of the last layer of filling there is a layer of strudel pastry sprinkled with cream to which an egg yolk has been added.
The bograč is a thick hot pot resembling a goulash or a stew that combines three types of meat (beef, pork, venison), wine and mushroom to taste, and potatoes. It is usually served in small kennels. Its popularity is growing, thanks to a special gastronomic event called »bogračijada«.
